It was a regular October day for everyone else, Chester’s Mill isn’t going to be the same. When an ex-army drifter/short-order cook decides that this town isn’t worth the hassle, Dale Barbara, Barbie to his friends, takes off to leave. Leaving everything behind him, he walks toward the city limit. That was when it all came to a head. An airplane crashed into nothing in the air. A truck ran into nothing and crashed. Many people were on the city limit gardening or what not when a dome came down over the whole town. You really couldn’t see it and once the initial shock of getting too close wore off you could touch it. It was like a bunch of fish in a fish bowl.

Some major fatalities happened within minutes. Those lucky people that took off out of town for the weekend were saved. Nobody could get in and nobody could get out. The first problem people noticed were all the dead birds that had flown into the side and broke their necks. Word worked its way around town and for a time it was just shock. Some thought that the chaos would indeed work in their favor. Second Selectman Big Jim Rennie was to everyone else a car dealer and the puppet master of the council. The town folk, however, needed someone to lead. First Selectman Andy Sanders lost his wife in the airplane that crashed. Of course to Rennie, he was just another puppet. It was tragic when the Police Chief got too close to the Dome with his pacemaker and died. That was when things got worse. Rennie’s idea was to keep this town from any help from outside and get the entire town to basically worship the ground he walked on. Also he seemed to have a special hate inside for Dale Barbara. While conspiring to do just that, many people got in his way. He wasn’t going to allow that.

WHAT AN IMAGINATION!

This book may be over a thousand pages but it is so worth reading. Of course all of Stephen King’s book are worth reading but I find I rather like this one best. There are many characters, since King likes that. Plus, he keeps them entertaining and doesn’t draw them out. There is so much to absorb from loyalty, to criminal activity, to political munbo-jumbo. In this, you get it all along with a great story line. I sincerely think that this many pages might to some be overwhelming but, King is such a wonderful author, he throws you in and you don’t need to come up for air. He gives you everything you need. Well I guess you still need the time.

I admitted this is my all-time favorite from Stephen King and that it’s worth four golden stars. If you have a different opinion, I would love to hear it.
